Dyson V15 Detect
RTINGS' August 2026 hardwood-floor testing names the Dyson V15 Detect its best cordless vacuum for hardwood floors. In that testing it earned an 8.0 hard-floor pickup score and 9.0 pet-hair pickup score. RTINGS also highlights the soft-roller floorhead, dust-illuminating light and strong filtration. On low power, RTINGS measured up to about 75 minutes of runtime, although real runtime varies with attachments and power mode.
Practical Buyer take: choose the V15 when you want premium hard-floor performance and will actually use its added cleaning and detection features.
Shark Stratos Cordless IZ862H
RTINGS lists the Shark Stratos Cordless IZ862H as its mid-range hardwood-floor recommendation, with an 8.0 hard-floor pickup score. It is a useful middle ground for a home with hardwood plus rugs or carpet, but at roughly 8.7 pounds in RTINGS' measurements it is noticeably heavier than the Dyson V15.
Practical Buyer take: a strong fit when you want very good hardwood cleaning but do not need to pay for the V15's premium feature set.
Shark Cordless Pet IX141
RTINGS' 2026 testing identifies the Shark Cordless Pet IX141 as its budget cordless hardwood-floor pick. It also earned an 8.0 hard-floor pickup score and 9.0 pet-hair pickup score, showing that lower price does not automatically mean weak debris pickup. The compromises are more important elsewhere: RTINGS measured a maximum runtime of about 38 minutes and found its fine-particle filtration much weaker than the premium choices.
Practical Buyer take: buy it for affordable hard-floor pickup, not because it matches premium models in runtime, filtration or refinement.
What actually matters on hardwood floors?
Floorhead design matters. Soft rollers are particularly well suited to hard floors because they glide across the surface while collecting fine dust and larger debris. A well-designed multi-surface head can also work, but aggressive brushes are not automatically better.
Look beyond advertised suction. Hardwood debris sits on the surface and in seams rather than being embedded like dirt in carpet. Real pickup, crevice cleaning, floorhead sealing and roller design tell you more than one suction number.
Weight changes how often you use it. Cordless convenience loses value if the machine feels cumbersome on stairs or during quick pickups. RTINGS classifies under 5 pounds as lightweight, 5 to 7 pounds as average and 7-plus pounds as heavy.
Filtration matters if fine dust matters to you. Strong pickup is only part of the job. A vacuum that leaks fine particles back into the room may be a poor fit for households that prioritize dust and allergen control.
How we researched these picks
The Practical Buyer has not personally lab-tested these vacuums. We relied primarily on RTINGS' August 2026 hardwood-floor test results, which are based on more than 110 vacuums purchased and tested, and cross-checked the category against September 2026 hard-floor testing from Vacuum Wars and current 2026 cordless-vacuum coverage. We prioritized hard-floor debris pickup, roller design, filtration, portability and runtime rather than advertised suction alone.
Vacuum Wars' September 2026 rankings provide useful additional context: after testing more than 100 cordless vacuums, it currently places the Bissell PowerClean DualBrush at the top of its hard-floor rankings. Because model availability and retailer coverage can shift quickly, we kept our primary three picks anchored to RTINGS' clearly segmented premium, mid-range and budget recommendations.
Bottom line
Choose the Dyson V15 Detect when you want premium hardwood performance and strong filtration. The Shark Stratos Cordless IZ862H is the practical middle ground for strong hard-floor cleaning without moving all the way into premium pricing. The Shark Cordless Pet IX141 is the budget choice for buyers who can accept shorter runtime and weaker fine-particle filtration.
If you already know that lightweight handling matters more than maximum cleaning performance, also compare the Dyson V12 Detect Slim before buying; current independent testing consistently identifies its lower weight as a key advantage.
